Mascara Masquerade

//sent for consideration//self purchase//affiliate//

I thought it might be fun to do a retrospective of some of the mascaras that I have experienced in the last little while. I've had some of these lying around in a little bag for some time. Others, I finished fairly recently. Some I really enjoyed, some... Not so much. I thought that I had saved all of the tubes, used, awful or foul but I guess that I was so disgusted with some of them or forgot to save them and I heaved them, rather then putting them in the used bag. Shame... I don't think proactively, sometimes.

I don't believe in the "Three Month Rule." I keep an opened mascara going until it runs out, dries out or I feel it's starting to go off. I have always wondered how "they" arrived at the Ninety Day Cutoff Rule of Doom. One day, my mascara is perfectly good, the next, it is twelve weeks old and "OMG!!!!! It's going to make my eyeballs fall out!!!!!" I have never had an issue with keeping mascaras going past the magical limit. I have never had an eye infection and I think that "rule" is just a way to get us to toss perfectly good mascara and go buy more, more, more. I don't know about you but I don't need a stupid rule to get me to buy more mascara...

Anyway, let's get on with it. I hope that you have a beverage and are comfy... This is going to take a little while.

Beauty Addicts Show Off Mascara

Beauty Addicts Show Off Mascara, $22.00. Beautiful, sleek tube, interesting, flat curved wand with standard bristles, not too wet formula. This stuff applied nicely, built length and volume very well, wasn't a pain in my ass to remove. Wears without smearing or transferring, doesn't irritate my eyes. Sadly, it got really flaky and dried out, very quickly.

Purchase? Most likely no.

Cover Girl Clump Crusher by Lash Blast Mascara

Cover Girl Clump Crusher by Lash Blast around $8.00 depending on where you buy it. Deeply black, wet formula. The rubber, spike toothed rubber wand lengthens, applies sick volume and, true to the name, not a clump in sight. This is one of the few mascaras I can apply three coats for glamazon lashes and not worry about my lashes looking like a nest of tarantulas. Wears without flaking, smearing or transferring and isn't irritating to my sensitive eyes.

Repurchase? Yeah, baby! Yeah!

L'Oreal Butterfly Mascara

L'Oreal Lash Out Butterfly They seem to have changed the name to Voluminous Butterfly since I bought this. Same diff. Around $9.00, depending on where you purchase. This unusually shaped, toothy rubber wand applies the deeply pigmented, very wet formula smoothly, building insane length. Volume wasn't stellar but I'm bigger on long, fluttery lashes so I didn't really care. The odd angle of the wand deposited a lot of mascara on my upper waterline. I had to clean up with a Precision Tip Q-Tip and tightline like a mad woman to cover up. No bueno! This mascara wore beautifully; no smearing, smudging, flaking or transferring. My eyes found it comfortable.

Repurchase? Maybe. I like the way it made my lashes look, even if it was a bit messy.

Benefit They're Real Mascara

Benefit They're Real! Lengthening and Volumizing Mascara, $24.00. Opinions on this mascara are polarized. People seem to passionately love it or hate it. I happen to love it. The rubber, spiky wand with it's war weapon end does it's job, applying the not too wet formula in a smooth, clump free manner, builds volume and enhances my natural lash length. I get all day, smudge and transfer free wear and no flaking. They're Real doesn't bother my peepers.

Repurchase? Yes, I'd buy a full size, when I work through my stash and the other snack sizes I have of this stuff.

Cover Girl The Supersizer By Lash Blast Mascara

Cover Girl The Super Sizer by Lash Blast, $8.00-ish, depending on where you live, sales and so on. I received this as a promotional item from the company. I was skeptical of this stuff at first, especially that funky wand and their weird deposit and twirl instructions. Once I got the hang of applying it my own way, I fell in love with this mascara. It's a fairly wet formula, but not messy, the wand applies and builds clump free length and volume. This mascara is comfortable, doesn't transfer, smear or flake. This mascara dried out fairly quickly. Not a biggie, it's super affordable but I expected the tube to live a bit longer than it did.

Purchase? Yep. I'd buy more, for sure. This is good stuff.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, $22.00. A gorgeous formula, deeply black pigmentation, beautifully designed standard bristle wand combine to give length, volume, problem free wear. My tiny gripe with this mascara is that it can clump, if I am not careful but if it is worked properly, I can build up super glamazon lashes in no time.

Purchase? Yes! I have been lucky enough to get snack and promo sizes of this stuff with various palettes and in goodie bags but I would definitely pony up the dough to buy a full size.

Lancome Grandiose Wide Angle Fan Effect Mascara

Lancome Wide Angle Fan Effect Mascara, $32.00. I have a bit of a love-hate thing going on with this mascara. I love the packaging, the swan neck wand and the somewhat wet, deeply pigmented formula. The bristle pattern on the rubber wand drives me a little nuts. If I used it just right I got that beautiful, full fan of lashes I crave. If I didn't pay attention, I would end up with a spike convention. If I could influence design at Lancome, I would suggest that they rework the tooth pattern on the wand. Everything else is fabulousness.

Repurchase? Mmmmaybe. If I can get it as part of a special promo deal, with other goodies. I don't know if it is worth it to me to put out thirty-two clams for it, alone. I wish it were.

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara, $21.00. Snack size, full size, this mascara delivers long, full, pretty, pretty lashes. The formula is pigmented, the perfect viscosity; the wand performs. No irritating my eyes, no smears, smudges or flaking.

Repurchase? I have and will. Always.

Dolce & Gabbana Passion Eyes Mascara

Dolce & Gabbana Passion Eyes Mascara, $29.50. Holy shit! This is fabulous stuff. The formula is neither to wet nor too dry, is deeply black and goes on like a dream, courtesy of the curved, super toothy rubber wand. My lashes looked fabulous when I used this snack sized wonder and funny enough, this little tube lasted me a long time! I loved the irritation, smudge, flake free wear.

Purchase? Some day, yepper! If the full size performs like the little one, it would be worth every penny.

Make Up Forever Smoky Extravagant

Make Up Forever Smoky Extravagant Mascara, $24.00. I keep lucking into snack size tubes of this stuff in goodie bags or as birthday gifts. This mascara is touted to provide volume, length and curl. Really? Not in my experience. I get length and lift, not a lot of curl, tho it doesn't kill curl when I use a lash curler. Volume? Naw. The big, fat, Christmas tree shaped wand is just the king of thing I like to precisely apply the dark black formula to my lashes. I'm a two handed mascara applier, the fat end gets my outer lashes and the fine pointed tip does my inner corner lashes to a nicety. I love this mascara for fine, fluttery everyday lashes. This stuff wears all day without smudging, smearing or transferring and it's never irritated my eyes. A solid performer.

Purchase? Likely not. I can get drugstore mascaras with this style wand that give me the same pretty lashes for a fraction of the price. I don't turn down freebie snack sized tubes, tho.

Christmas Tree Wand

Speaking of Christmas tree wands. Yes, I am aware that I need to get a life.

Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara

Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara, about five-ish dollars, depending on where you get it. I like this stuff for setting my eye brows. It does a pretty good job and is dirt cheap and I don't feel bad about round filing it when it gets discoloured by the brow pigment that is picked up by the wand. This tube wasn't used up and it hadn't gone bad, I just couldn't look at that mess, any longer so... Buh-bye!

Repurchase? I usually do. It does a nice job and is extremely affordable. I am currently using a Mirabella gel that I really dig. And I would like to pick up the Anastasia and try it, too. But yeah, I'll most likely buy another tube of this, some time.

So, there you have it. A rundown of some of the mascaras I've blown through. As I said earlier, I tossed some, not thinking about a post like this. L'Oreal Miss Manga was one. I dig that mascara! But I forgot to hang on to the tube. Oh well. I'll do better in future.

Did you see any of your favorite mascaras in this post? Are you but stupid in love with any mascara that you think I should try? Sing out in a comment. Enable me!
