Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette | My Notes and Swatches

I am a little sad that this particular series of reviews is coming to an end. Besides the Naked collection, the Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Collection collaboration is my favorite from Urban Decay and if it had been in my budget to do so, I would have purchased the whole damned thing, just because I think it is that lovely and special.

The final item I have to share with you from the Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Collection collaboration is the Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette.

Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette-Review-Packaging-Detail-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Presentation of the blush palette is similar to that of the eye shadow palette. A gold, black geometric stripe embossed box holds a heavy plastic and acrylic palette of the same build and dimensions with white and gold detailing. I like that the shadow and blush palettes have different coloured dots on top, it makes grabbing the one I want easy. Black dots, shadow, white dots, blush. Yes. Again, perfect attention to detail. I like that.

Please lift the magnetized lid to see a full sized mirror also printed with "Magic's in the Makeup." Tucked snugly below the mirror, each in it's own designated spot are six pans of cheek colour. While each shade is given a specific purpose by Urban Decay, one can easily mix, match and use the different colours as one would see fit.

A close up gander at the goods. I feel as if this palette was curated for me. Soft, easy shades and tones that, when applied with a wispy brush and a light hand are perfect for my fair, neutral skin and deliver the look I prefer. That said, I believe that this palette can easily work for beauties with darker skin as the powders are pigmented and build up beautifully.

Shall we take a look at the individual shades and swatches?

Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette-Swatches-notesfrommydressingtable.com

  • Cherry: A girlie pink satin. This is my favorite of the bunch. My brush just automatically goes into this one and it's beautiful on the skin.
  • Easy: Deep rose pink with a gold shimmer. This gives my face that just-fell-in-love-flush.
  • Angel: Champagne nude shimmer. Hello highlighter.
  • Lo-Fi: Light bronze matte. For a gentle warming of the skin. Works on the eyes, as well.
  • Hush: Light pink with gold shimmer. I haven't played with this one all that much, yet but it is very pretty.
  • OC: Pale peach with pink shift. Okay, my camera is a dick. I tried to get this one colour true on my skin but all my camera wanted to see was the shift. If I was trying to capture the shift, it would be nowhere. I honestly believe that my camera loves to troll me. Anyway, this is really lovely on the face.
My overall assessment of the Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette is that it is gorgeous. I love the packaging, the cheek colours are versatile, beautifully pigmented and blend into the skin like a dream. While the $45.00 price tag may feel a little hefty, this palette contains a good deal of product and I would have paid a lot more to buy the same amount of product in individual compacts. This palette is a winner in every aspect and I am so happy that I bought it.

Urban Decay cosmetics are cruelty free.

If you would like to pick up the Urban Decay X Gwen Stefani Blush Palette it is currently available at SephoraUlta Beauty and other paces you find Urban Decay. Have you picked up this glorious thing? What do you think of it? Are you as big a fan as I?

NU ME Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!

Nu Me Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!-Review-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Looking for a new curling wand? I recently got the opportunity to try a new-to-me hair styling tool line and I'd like to share my impressions with you.

Nu Me Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!-Review-notesfrommydressingtable.com

I received a NU ME 25 MM Classic Curling Wand. Tucked snugly in a heavy paperboard tube, securely wrapped in bubble wrap, my curling wand arrived in perfect condition. My curling wand has a turquoise handle and a tourmaline coated black 25 mm barrel.

According to the NU ME website the Classic Curling Wand is NU ME's original and highest performing curling wand. The tourmaline coated barrel disburses negative ions and creates soft, shiny, runway ready curls. The 25 mm barrel imparts body and bounce for enviable, cool girl volume and style.

Nu Me Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!-Review-Toggle-Switch-Detail-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Using the NU ME Classic Curling Wand couldn't be easier. A toggle switch is the sole control. Flip it and the iron rapidly comes up to temperature. Mine was ready to rock my style in a minute or so. A lightweight (not flimsy) build and diamond textured, slightly rubbery finish on the handle makes this iron easy to hold on to and very pleasant to use. No matter how long it takes to do my hair, I don't get heavy iron fatigue. This old broad can appreciate that.

Nu Me Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!-Review-Glove-Detail-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Also included with the NU ME Classic Curling Wand is a heat resistant (not heat proof, you still need to use a little care, gentle reader) glove to protect tender digits from accidental contact with the hot, hot, hot wand. I am an on-again-off-again glove user. I get impatient with it wanting to drag in my hair, then I'll burn the tips of my fingers, turn the air blue, cussing until the sting resides and I'll pull on a protective glove and carry on.

This iron curls fast, I can section my hair, curl it and be done in less than ten minutes. Not bad, not too bad at all. For reference, I have thick, just below shoulder blade length hair. My tresses take and hold a curl easily.

Nu Me Classic Curling Wand and a Very Special Offer!-Curled-Hair-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. I tried with my camera but the lighting had changed, trying to use my self timer and position myself just right... It was a clusterfuck. The husband unit snapped this one on my phone, when I was in decent light and I decided to roll with it. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

So, this is a nice curling wand. It gives me pretty, soft curls and waves, nice volume and my hair looks smooth and shiny. I'm pleased, overall.

If you would like to pick up a NU ME wand, or perhaps a new straightener or set for yourself NU ME is running a special sale, this weekend, starting Friday, 3/25 and going through the weekend to celebrate their 5th anniversary. Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani

Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Makeup Collection-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani recently teamed up to curate a makeup collection and when I heard the news, I did a little happy dance. An eye shadow palette, blush palette, a handful of lipsticks and liners, all to perfectly enhance a fair complexion and set off blonde hair. Which, by some strange coincidence, I happen to have.

I splurged and purchased four items from the collection. I bought the eye and cheek palette and two lipsticks. Today, I'm going to share the Urban Decay | Gwen Stefani Eye Shadow Palette and my thoughts about it, with you.

Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Eye Shadow Palette-Review-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Shall we begin with the packaging? The outer box is an embossed white and gold geometric stripe print. This is one of the prettiest outer boxes I have ever seen. It is bright and gold and eye catching without being overdone or veering into ticky-tacky. The palette, it's self is heavy plastic, it feels weighty, smooth and luxe in the hand. White, trimmed in gold with large black dots under a clear acrylic top and embellished with a plate that bears the name of the palette. Every little detail is so beautifully attended to.

Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Palette Details-notesfrommydressingtable.com

Lift the magnetized lid and inside you will find a full sized mirror, plenty big enough to reflect your beautiful eyes or face, if you are doing your primping on the go. In the lower corner of the mirror "The Magic's in the Makeup" is printed, to remind us that makeup can work wonders. All we have to do is believe.

Fifteen largely neutral full sized eye shadows are arranged in a rigid, black plastic divider that is printed with the shade names. The shadows are laid out in a manner that makes perfect sense, to me. There are lid colours, highlights, transition and smokey shades and tones, a plenty. Even a few fun pops of colour.

Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Review-Shadow Close Up-notesfrommydressingtable.com

There is a nice mix of textures in this palette. Matte, satin, shimmer, metallic and a couple of sparkly fine glitters. The looks one can create with this palette, alone or mixed and matched with others are endless.

Skimp, Stark and Blackout are repeater shades, the rest of the shadows are new to this palette.

Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Review-Shadows and Swatches-notesfrommydressingtable.com

I have to apologize in advance for the "quality" of the close up photographs of the shadows. I take all of my blog photos with an aging point and shoot camera and there is only so much it is capable of doing. Please to forgive?

Okay, let's take a look at the eye shadows, close up and the corresponding swatches, arranged along the lower edge of each shadow.
  • Blonde: Creamy off white satin
  • Bathwater: Delicate, golden ivory shimmer
  • Skimp: Beige satin matte
  • Steady: Rose gold shimmer
  • Punk: Warm, reddened brown matte
  • Baby: Delicate, semi sheer pink shimmer/glitter
  • Anaheim: Gentle matte taupe
  • Stark: Light tan matte
  • Zone: Light saddle brown matte
  • Serious: Dark and dirty grey green matte with a tiny gold fleck
  • Pop: Semi sheer peach shimmer/glitter
  • Harajuku: Bubblegum pink shimmer
  • Danger: Blackened navy blue metallic with a silvery fleck
  • 1987: True gold metallic
  • Blackout: Midnight black matte
How's the quality? You might ask. It is Urban Decay excellent, overall. All of the shadows, save Baby, Pop and Harajuku are beautifully pigmented and have excellent payoff. Baby, Pop and Harajuku are a bit more sheer/glittery but definitely buildable and workable. I find Serious and Blackout to be a little stiff and patchy but again, with patience and a good blending brush are perfectly malleable. All of the shadows build, blend, combine or stand alone as I would expect them to. Wear is excellent, these shadows stay colour true all day with primer. I routinely wear primer because my lids, while not at all oily, eat eye shadow for lunch, if I don't.

I have read complaints that this eye shadow palette isn't "exciting" enough, that surely a palette with Gwen's name on it would be fulled with bright, bold colour and wild textures and finishes. Gwen curated colours that she, herself likes to wear. If you look at her pictures and footage, she wears neutral eye and cheek colours and a bold lip. This palette is very "her" and not at all a surprise. I love the colours she chose, this palette is right in my makeup wheelhouse; neutral, wearable, classic with a few fun pops of colour to spice things up a bit, now and then.

Morphe/Live Glam Makeup Brush Subscription - February

Because You Can Never Have Too Many Brushes - Morphe

Like just about everyone else who watches makeup videos, I have seen so. many. gushing, excited reviews of Morphe makeup brushes on YouTube. Used in tutorials, receiving top billing in favorites videos, this brush line is touted to be the last word in makeup application tools.

Is it? Are Morphe brushes all that and a bag of chips? I decided, after reading a few reviews written by fellow bloggers I trust to try Morphe's Monthly brush subscription and see, for myself just what they're made of, find out if they live up to the hype.

Morphe/Live Glam Makeup Brush Subscription - February - Review and overview - notesfrommydressingtable.com

Who doesn't like getting brand new makeup brushes, every month? I know that I do!

For $19.00 a month, Morphe/Live Glam sends their subscribers a makeup brush bundle which is supposed to contain thirty dollars worth of Morphe makeup brushes. The bundle can contain eye brushes, face brushes or a mix. My first shipment, that I ordered and received in February is a mix of seven eye and face brushes.

Signing up for this service is easy enough. The Live Glam site is easy to navigate, the sign up/pay process was quick, smooth and glitch free. Billing, so far, is secure and accurate. I wasn't sure about the bill and send schedule that Live Glam uses for this subscription service and I expected to wait until March to be placed in the queue and receive my first shipment. Nope! I had an e-mail in my inbox in a day or so telling me that my first shipment was going out, in the next couple of days. Within a week of signing up, my first brush bundle landed on my doorstep. No waiting list, no jumping through hoops, no bullshit. Sign up, pay up, get my stuff, fast. Well done, so far.

Morphe/Live Glam Makeup Brush Subscription - February - Review - notesfrommydressingtable.com

Here are the seven brushes I received in my first shipment:

  • M334 - Mini Angled Buffer: This small, angled brush has very soft, synthetic bristles. Suitable for contouring, highlighting, pinpoint powder application, cream blush, a wash of colour all over the eyelid... This is a versatile little multitasker.
  • M218 - Blending Fluff: Long sable bristles in this soft, flexible largish eye brush work to diffuse, soften, blend out harsh lines and deliver a beautifully "blown out" finish.
  • M333 - Chiseled Shader : Dyed black sable bristles. This large, firm shader sweeps shadow all over the eye in a trice or precisely packs colour on the mobile lid with ease and speed.
  • M224 - Oval Camouflage : A synthetic brush that is designed for precise application of cream concealer or eye shadow.
  • M165 - Angled Liner/Brow: A firm yet soft synthetic angled brush designed to fill brows or apply eye liner.
  • M169 - Round Crease: A soft, rounded dyed black sable bristle brush for applying and blending colour into the crease and outer V of the lid.
  • M495 - Duo Deluxe Fan: This duo fiber super soft dyed black sable and synthetic bristle brush is lovely for powder and highlighter.
Handles are painted black wood, ferrules are bright, silver toned metal; I'm guessing aluminum? Brush build seems to be pretty sturdy but not as tight and precise as I would expect from a higher quality brush. The line where the ferrule is clamped to the handles is not a solid, smooth ring, rather tiny dashes, all the way around. There is a tiny gap at the top of the ferrule which leaves me a little concerned about moisture encroachment and reminds me to use a good deal of care when washing these brushes, to reduce the chance of problems down the road.

Bristles are all soft, cuts seem to be pretty smooth and even. The black dyed sable brushes bleed dye like crazy, when brand new. Give these specific brushes a very good washing before first use and shampoo at least twice to wash away excess dye. I just have to ask, why dye the bristles, at all? The natural bristle colour is just fine and I prefer to not have to deal with dye bleed. The natural bristles are quite soft, not scratchy or poke-y on my skin. Synthetic bristles are whisper soft against the skin, especially those in the fan brush. Shedding isn't much of an issue. My natural hair brushes have lost a few bristles but I expect that, in brand new brushes. If it picks up or continues, we'll have a problem but so far, so good. Handle length is not what I consider "long." Think the length of Sonia Kashuk brushes. I prefer longer handles but this is not a deal breaker.

Sooo... Are Morphe brushes the be all, end all of makeup brushes? The best of the best of the best... EVAH! brushes? Based on the brushes I received, no. These are solid performing, decent quality makeup brushes that look nice and do a good job of makeup application. Is the subscription worth the ask? Yes. For twenty dollars, I feel that I received full value for my money and I'm looking forward to my next shipment. This subscription would be great for new to makeup beauties or anyone looking to increase their brush hoard collection.

I have been sifting around the Morphe website and I'm interested in trying their various brushes and sets. They appear to be good looking, well priced performers.

If you are interested in trying the Morphe/Live Glam brush subscription, sign up here

Are you receiving this subscription? How do you like it, so far? Are you happy with your brushes? Please do tell.

Bargain Beauty Find | Let's Hear It for the Micelles

Micellar cleansing waters are all the skin care rage, right now. Sweeping like wildfire through our beauty world, we are embracing this cherished for decades by European beauties cleanser with open arms. I resisted the lure of the micelles for a while. My regular cleansing routine was working just fine for me and really... Water? To cleanse?  Could it truly be that effective? Or were the masses merely following like lemmings over the cliff the Pied Piper of Hype?

Bargain Beauty Find | Let's Hear It for the Micelles - notesfrommydressingtable.com

Being curious about the micellar water phenomena but budget conscious, I decided to try Garnier Skin Active Micellar Water. Raved about in review after review, offered in two versions, suitable for all skin types, even sensitive, widely available and very affordable at well under ten dollars a bottle (use coupons and shop sales for screaming deals, I got mine for around five clams, each, that way), Garnier micellar water seemed like a perfect way to dip my toe into the micelle pool. I had a few questions about micellar water and I decided to fire up my Google fu and see what this stuff is all about.

What exactly is micellar water? Simply put, it is a water based cleanser with few ingredients, including glycerine and "Micellar technology." So, what are micelles and how do they work? According to the websites I have read (bear in mind that I am not a chemist), put simply they are charged lipid spheres that form aggregates called micelles. When suspended in an aqueous solution, they act as a gentle detergent, binding to dirt, surface oil and makeup to cleanse, tone and refresh the skin.

Here are the ingredients lists for the cleansing water and the bi phase cleansing water, respectively:

Bargain Beauty Find | Let's Hear It for the Micelles - notesfrommydressingtable.com

Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water is available in a "standard" cleansing water and a bi phase version. For my skin, I like the bi phase for initially removing stubborn eye makeup and doing a first makeup removal sweep all over my face then follow up with the other one to fully cleanse, tone and refresh my complexion.

I am now a micelle believer. Micellar water really does work. It is gentle, scent free, effective and easy to use. I can use it as a sole cleanser or as a makeup remover before deeper cleansing. My micellar waters were a godsend when I was recently ill with the Zombie Death Plague. I needed to continue giving my skin care but I didn't relish standing at my sink, going through the steps while hacking up a lung. Sitting at my dressing table, sweeping a soft, cooling cotton pad across my skin then smoothing in moisturizer was easier and allowed me to get back to my cozy nest, Netflix and NyQuil. Where I could hack up a lung in comfort with my refreshed, pampered skin.

I like the Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Waters. They are easy to find in just about any drugstore, big box store and online. They are very affordable, especially if you shop sales and use coupons. Micellar water works beautifully and definitely lives up to the hype. If you haven't tried micellar water, yet, this is a great way to get acquainted.

What are your favorite micellar waters? I'm planning to try other brands. I mean, I have to, right? I'm a beauty blogger. I owe it to you, to sacrifice myself to the cause.

StriVectin Multi Action Restorative Cream is a lightweight, whipped creme that spreads softly across the skin and drops right in to provide deep hydration and treatment. This cream doesn't feel slick, heavy or greasy on the skin and should be compatible with many skin types.

When I use this cream, my skin feels firmer, smoother and looks plumped and refreshed. My skin is very dry and this is more of a treatment as it can't stand as a sole source of moisture for me. Backed up with another cream it does the job. Use of another moisturizer is not a deal breaker for me, I have several treatment creams that need a little backup to work for my crazy skin and they are cherished because they deliver results.
