Rock Your Beautiful Eyes With Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani-Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Makeup

Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani recently teamed up to curate a makeup collection and when I heard the news, I did a little happy dance. An eye shadow palette, blush palette, a handful of lipsticks and liners, all to perfectly enhance a fair complexion and set off blonde hair. Which, by some strange coincidence, I happen to have.

I splurged and purchased four items from the collection. I bought the eye and cheek palette and two lipsticks. Today, I'm going to share the Urban Decay | Gwen Stefani Eye Shadow Palette and my thoughts about it, with you.

Shall we begin with the packaging? The outer box is an embossed white and gold geometric stripe print. This is one of the prettiest outer boxes I have ever seen. It is bright and gold and eye catching without being overdone or veering into ticky-tacky. The palette, it's self is heavy plastic, it feels weighty, smooth and luxe in the hand. White, trimmed in gold with large black dots under a clear acrylic top and embellished with a plate that bears the name of the palette. Every little detail is so beautifully attended to.

Lift the magnetized lid and inside you will find a full sized mirror, plenty big enough to reflect your beautiful eyes or face, if you are doing your primping on the go. In the lower corner of the mirror "The Magic's in the Makeup" is printed, to remind us that makeup can work wonders. All we have to do is believe.

Fifteen largely neutral full sized eye shadows are arranged in a rigid, black plastic divider that is printed with the shade names. The shadows are laid out in a manner that makes perfect sense, to me. There are lid colours, highlights, transition and smokey shades and tones, a plenty. Even a few fun pops of colour.

There is a nice mix of textures in this palette. Matte, satin, shimmer, metallic and a couple of sparkly fine glitters. The looks one can create with this palette, alone or mixed and matched with others are endless.

Skimp, Stark and Blackout are repeater shades, the rest of the shadows are new to this palette.

I have to apologize in advance for the "quality" of the close up photographs of the shadows. I take all of my blog photos with an aging point and shoot camera and there is only so much it is capable of doing. Please to forgive?

Okay, let's take a look at the eye shadows, close up and the corresponding swatches, arranged along the lower edge of each shadow.
  • Blonde: Creamy off white satin
  • Bathwater: Delicate, golden ivory shimmer
  • Skimp: Beige satin matte
  • Steady: Rose gold shimmer
  • Punk: Warm, reddened brown matte
  • Baby: Delicate, semi sheer pink shimmer/glitter
  • Anaheim: Gentle matte taupe
  • Stark: Light tan matte
  • Zone: Light saddle brown matte
  • Serious: Dark and dirty grey green matte with a tiny gold fleck
  • Pop: Semi sheer peach shimmer/glitter
  • Harajuku: Bubblegum pink shimmer
  • Danger: Blackened navy blue metallic with a silvery fleck
  • 1987: True gold metallic
  • Blackout: Midnight black matte
How's the quality? You might ask. It is Urban Decay excellent, overall. All of the shadows, save Baby, Pop and Harajuku are beautifully pigmented and have excellent payoff. Baby, Pop and Harajuku are a bit more sheer/glittery but definitely buildable and workable. I find Serious and Blackout to be a little stiff and patchy but again, with patience and a good blending brush are perfectly malleable. All of the shadows build, blend, combine or stand alone as I would expect them to. Wear is excellent, these shadows stay colour true all day with primer. I routinely wear primer because my lids, while not at all oily, eat eye shadow for lunch, if I don't.

I have read complaints that this eye shadow palette isn't "exciting" enough, that surely a palette with Gwen's name on it would be fulled with bright, bold colour and wild textures and finishes. Gwen curated colours that she, herself likes to wear. If you look at her pictures and footage, she wears neutral eye and cheek colours and a bold lip. This palette is very "her" and not at all a surprise. I love the colours she chose, this palette is right in my makeup wheelhouse; neutral, wearable, classic with a few fun pops of colour to spice things up a bit, now and then.
