I have been a fan of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz for several years and I thought it was time that I finally bought my first Anastasia Beverly Hills powder cosmetic product, and boy, is it a doosy! The much hyped Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette has been burning up the Beauty Blogosphere and YouTube for many months and the love doesn't seem to be fading, from what I can see.
Let us begin our exploration of this palette at the beginning. The packaging. For it must needs be addressed. The industry standard sturdy paperboard palette is wrapped in a flocked velvety, grabby stuff that drives me absolutely bat shit crazy trying to keep it clean. I don't feel that saying that I despise the surface of this palette is in any way an overstatement. Really, what were they thinking? I would have done something evocative of an old masters painting, in an easy to wipe clean material. But that's just me.
Okay. Now that we've got that out of the way, let us move on to happier things.
Such as what's contained within. Disregarding the meh, usable enough if disliked double ended synthetic fiber brush that has since received a hair cut, this palette houses a plenty big enough to primp your eye look mirror and fourteen gorgeous eye shadows, each clearly labeled with it's name below.
The Modern Renaissance Palette is comprised of fourteen rich, sixteenth century art inspired colours ranging from soft to deep. There are three shimmers, a soft satin matte and ten matte finishes. The shadows are laid out in a fashion that makes perfect sense to my eye and all fourteen are shades and tones that can mix, match and blend together to create any number of beautiful eye looks from soft and neutral workaday to spectacular works of eye art. Not only is this palette a perfect, self contained unit, these shadows work and play very well with other brands and finishes. The sky is the limit when you have this gorgeous thing in your makeup arsenal.
Swatch-a-Go-Go. These swatches were done on bare, lightly moisturized skin. Laugh at my incompetence as you glory in just how beautiful these shadows are, even in my crap swatch shots.
Okay, let's talk quality. It is in a word, outstanding. All fourteen of these shadows are smooth, velvety soft and silky to the touch. If a couple are the slightest bit "stiff" it is only in comparison to their contemporaries and in no way denotes a lack of rich, buttery goodness on their part. These shadows are intensely pigmented and they swatch like whoa, as you can see above. They apply, build and blend nearly flawlessly without going muddy or flying away under my brush. I do get a little fallout with a few shades; Cyprus Umber, Love Letter, Venetian Red and Red Ochre can sprinkle a bit so when I want to use those shades, I either hold a tissue under my eye or just do my eyes, first. I honestly don't care about the fallout as the shadows and the looks that can be achieved with them are so beautiful.
I get all day fade and crease proof wear from these shadows, even if I forget to apply primer. I can apply these shadows in the morning and they look just as fresh and vibrant when I go to remove them, at night.
The Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette is, in my opinion worth every penny of it's $42.00 asking price. If something were to happen to this palette, I would move heaven and earth to replace it at once. Yeah. It's that good. And you need it, if you don't yet have it. I bought mine from Sephora. It is also listed on the Ulta Beauty website. While this palette seems to be sold out online, as of right now, there is hope as both sites leave the listing open for future re stock. I have chatted with various fellow beauty enthusiasts who are seeing and purchasing it in store so hit up your local Sephora and Ulta Beauty locations if you don't want to wait for it to come back online.
I need to try some of their highlighter powders, next. I love a good highlighter and from what I've seen, they make a good one.
The Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette is formulated without Parabens, Sulfates or Phthalates. Anastasia Beverly Hills is cruelty free.
