what perfume means to me

I love perfume. My most powerful memories, both beautiful and horrifying are closely tied to scent and fragrances are my strongest memory triggers. While I don't really have a signature scent, I do have a few strong favorites that I reach for more often than others and I do have a scent type. I tend to fall most deeply in love with florals, especially those with a fresh, or gourmand component. I also enjoy clean, watery, ozone and some green notes as well as sweet, fruity and rich, delicious caramel, bitter almond, tonka, chocolate, cherry, vanilla even a touch of tobacco or leather. Wow. Way to narrow it down, Erika. Next time, just try "I have an eclectic taste in fragrance". Geeze.

"This time, I have created a perfume out of this one ingredient. A perfume that won’t be one, in the conventional sense of the word."—Romano Ricci, Brand Founder and Perfumer

the magic of Ambergris

A unique perfume ideal for anyone, even those who don't normally like to wear perfume, Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Eau de Parfum is a very different kind of fragrance! This is not your typical perfume, gentle reader as the single scent note is Cetalox, which is Synthetic Ambergris.

What is Ambergris? I knew nothing about Ambergris until I got involved with this Not a Perfume and it's kind of fascinating. And... a little gross, if I'm being perfectly honest. Briefly, natural Ambergris is a hard, waxy substance that originates as a secretion from the intestinal tract of sperm whales when they don't feel well. It is not feces but it is "pooped" out and can be found floating in the ocean and washed up on beaches. Ambergris is most widely used as an ingredient in perfumes to make the scent last longer on the skin. Ambergris is also used in cocktails and in Persian sherbets. It is said that Casanova added Ambergris to chocolate mousse as an aphrodisiac. Natural, aged Ambergris is rare and it is extremely valuable because only a tiny percentage of sperm whales ever secrete the substance. While harvesting and selling natural Ambergris doesn't directly harm the whales in any way and it is still legal in many parts of the world, the practice has been illegal in the United States since 1972, as it is a product of the vulnerable sperm whale.

where I try to describe the indescribable

Described by Sephora as belonging to the woody/earthy scent family, this scent is as far from "wood" as it can get, as far as my nose is concerned. Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume is indescribable but I'm going to try. Imagine someone who smells so good; so clean, fresh and alive, so alluring, so... compelling and utterly sexy that you find them irresistible and you don't want to stop breathing them in. That is how this scent smells, it is a scent, yet it isn't. It is pure feeling and emotion in a perfume.

Not a Perfume is clean and fresh but it doesn't contain "clean and fresh notes". It is one of those fragrances you can wear anywhere because while it doesn't smell like "perfume", you smell so amazing that everyone is going to enjoy being near you. This fragrance is not only gorgeous on it's own, you can layer it with other scents to ramp them up, give them an edge and make them that much more alluring.

I really dig this scent, so much and I'd love to have a full sized bottle of it, some day, soon.

  12. Odd their description was so off on it. Not usually a fresh clean scent liker but I would give it a go!

    1. I don't trust Sephora's notes on a lot of products. They are often off on fragrances and skin care? How can EVERYTHING in their skin care listings be right for all skin types? No. This scent is clean and fresh but it isn't clean and fresh notes, which I know sounds contradictory.

  13. I got this for the name alone a few years ago and subsequently discovered that I LOVE the scent of pure ambergris - this is one of my summer go-tos when I don’t want my perfume to be too heavy & cloying!

    1. It's a perfect scent for for that. I love that I smell good but not "perfumy".

I love to know what you're thinking. I dig honest discourse and lively discussion, even a good debate. I do not dig spam, link dropping, hate speech or personal attacks either against myself or my gentle readers.
